When you finally feel ready to take your newborn outside, a quiet stroll through a beautiful park can feel like a breath of fresh air. Long Island has so many lovely green spaces, but not all of them are perfect for a tiny baby. You want calm paths, plenty of shade, and somewhere close to parking in case you need a quick exit. As a newborn photographer on Long Island, I’ve spent time in many of these parks, and these are a few favorites for peaceful walks with your little one.
Many of the families I work with travel from Syosset, NY and surrounding North Shore communities, and they often ask where they can take their newborn for a quiet, stroller-friendly walk. Being just minutes from Syosset, these parks offer peaceful green spaces that feel manageable and calming during those early weeks at home.
If you’re near Plainview or central Nassau County, Bethpage State Park is one of my go-to recommendations for new parents. It’s easy to reach, has smooth walking paths for strollers, and offers plenty of shady spots to stop for a feed or diaper change. The picnic areas are spacious, so you can find a quiet corner away from the crowd and enjoy your baby’s first moments outdoors.

Further south, Wantagh Park is a lovely option. The paved path along the waterfront is breezy and peaceful, especially in the morning. The wide trails are stroller-friendly, and the views of the bay make for a calming atmosphere if your newborn falls asleep in the stroller.
If you’re craving a bit more nature, Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River feels like a hidden garden. It’s one of the most serene spots on Long Island, with stroller-friendly trails and blooming flowers along the Connetquot River. It’s a great place to simply walk and breathe while your baby rests. Many of my clients choose it as a backdrop for their outdoor newborn photography sessions because the light and scenery are beautiful year-round.
Over on the North Shore, Heckscher Park in Huntington is perfect for a short, easy walk around the pond. There’s soft shade from the trees and benches along the path for a quick feed or cuddle. It’s also a wonderful place to meet another new mom for a stroll — fresh air and gentle movement can do wonders for your postpartum recovery.

And if you’re in western Suffolk County, Belmont Lake State Park in Babylon offers a relaxing loop around the lake. The path is wide, smooth, and stroller-safe. You’ll often see other new parents doing the same thing — taking their newborns out for a calm walk in nature.
No matter which park you visit, keep it simple. Aim for a short outing, bring a lightweight blanket, stay in the shade, and try early morning or late afternoon when it’s cooler. These early walks aren’t just good for you and your baby — they’re also beautiful opportunities to capture some natural newborn photos surrounded by Long Island’s greenery and golden light.
If you’d love to preserve these early memories, I’d be honored to help. I specialize in newborn photography on Long Island, and I love photographing those first gentle moments outdoors. You can learn more or book your session here.
